We had some unexpected visitors show up at the house this afternoon. A mother bear and two cubs. They all made their way up into our apple tree for an afternoon snack. We have been here almost 4 1/2 years and have never seen any in our yard. We knew they were around. Now we have proof!

This was today's project. A playset with a slide for the kids. I had picked up the slide from the dump about 6 months (maybe longer!) ago and thought I could build something for the little ones to play on. I also made it with the intention when we move I can transport it. They have already enjoyed a lot of playtime on it. They all helped with various parts whether it was holding boards or handing me screws. It was quite fun to design and build.

Lucy Mae is Here!

Well, it's been a long 9 months. (at least for Nomie!) Lucy Mae Schneider was born on Thursday October 14, 2010 at 4:47pm. She was 8lbs 11 oz and 22 inches long. She has some very happy sisters and a brother who always want to hold her. After 2 days in the hospital treating a high bilirubin (sp? - jaundice) count she (and Nomie) is home. Everyone is doing well. Here are some pictures.

As a belated birthday present for Grant I took him to a Yankees game. The Yankees were playing the Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore. It was a great game and the Yankees pitcher had a perfect game going into the 7th inning. The Yankees won 5-1.

Booth Brothers Concert

Last Friday night we went to a concert of the Booth Brothers. They are a southern gospel group and the kids (and us) really enjoy their music. Scott had won some tickets off a local radio station. We all had a great time. Here are some pictures of the kids with Ronnie Booth of the Booth Brothers.

Well......Grant, Autumn, Grace and Emma took their end of the year tests for school this year and here are the results:

Grant - 98%
Autumn - 99%
Grace - 97%
Emma - High 90% (her's is not listed the same as the other kids because it is first grade)

We are so proud of how well they are doing. We waited a little longer than normal to have them take the test so they did a good of remembering what they learned.

So...onward to the next level. For those of you with scorecards.Grant - going into 9th grade, Autumn - going into 8th grade, Grace - going into 4th grade, and Emma heading into 2nd grade. Maggie - just being cute (that is a grade, isn't it?)

After church we spent the afternoon at Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop's eating and watching the Masters golf tournament. The girls decided to put Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop's dandelions to good use and made some head garb. We also had an egg hunt for the kids that afternoon and here are some pictures.

Grant was playing in a recreation league basketball game on Saturday and as a player on the other team was charging down the lane to try to take a shot Grant stepped in front of him and he got plowed over.........the results are below............

Yep......broken arm.

The break is right where his arm bone meets his wrist. He sees an Orthopedic doctor tomorrow.

Also...on the play there was an offensive foul was on the other player. Grant actually went back in and played the last 3 minutes or so because they needed another player in there. Unfortunately they lost the game and lost Grant for the rest of the season.......

That's the way the ball bounces.......(sorry for the bad pun!)

We had Thanksgiving at home for the first time since we have been married. It was just us. Autumn made a pumpkin pie and Grace made an apple pie. Both were very delicious. Nomie cooked a turkey for the first time. Everything turned out great and it was a fun day of eating, playing games and watching a movie. Below are some pictures from our meal.

Grant and I went skeet shooting this morning with the guys from the church that we are attending. We had a blast even though we didn't hit anything. It is a lot different trying to hit a moving target than a stationary one. Our shoulders are a little sore but it was worth it.

Here is me trying to take care of business...needless to say.....I didn't : ( Here is Grant in the Annie Oakley contest. The person to the right shoots first. If he misses the middle person then shoots. If he hits the pigeon the first person is out. If the middle misses the third tries. If he hits it the first two are out. If they all miss, you try again. There are some other rules but they are too confusing to try to write out....
Next time we'll get'em...If there is a next time....

The Work Continues.....(and other misc. pics)

Currently we have many house projects in the works. The 2 biggest are the kitchen and the front porch. The kitchen is in a state of limbo right now because we are waiting for the counter tops to come in and have the sink installed. I think Nomie is either getting used to the idea of doing the dishes in the bathroom sink or has just stopped mentioning how inconvenient this has been. We will have some pictures up as soon as it is done. The counter is to arrive at Lowe's any day now. The biggest project that I have tackled so far on this house has to be the porch. It was is real bad shape when we bought the house and I knew it would need a lot of work to get it back the way it should be. I ripped of the decking boards last week to see what I was in for. Well, it was worse than what I expected but could have been a lot worse. I spent a good part of Saturday replacing bad floor joist and shoring (sp?) it up. I still have some leveling to do because of some sunk posts but I think we are gaining ground and hopefully will we ready to redo the decking shortly. Here are some pictures of the porch with the decking off.

We finished up school early in June and gave the kids a break before they had to take their end of the year testing. Though they don't like taking the test but have done very well on past tests and we were not real worried. Well, they had their tests over a 3 day period last week and the results are in. The score below is out of 100% and contains all the subjects.

Grant - 97%

Autumn - 96%

Grace - 99%

We are so proud of how well the kids are doing. It also confirms that homeschooling was the right decision.

Congratulations to Grant, Autumn, and Grace for doing so well.

Locks of Love

Autumn has been growing her hair long so she can donate it to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that will take the hair and weave it into wigs for children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of these are cancer patients who have lost their hair from Chemotherapy. Here are the pictures of Autumn before and after.

Here's Mommy cutting Autumn's Braid. The hair donated must be at least 10 inches long. Autumn had about 13-14 inches cut off.

We went camping on Mother's Day weekend at the Shenandoah KOA located in Staunton, VA. It was a full weekend with fishing and mini-golf and lots of fun. Here are some pictures from the weekend.

Autumn entered herself in a short story and poetry contest that was sponsored by the homeschooling group that we are involved in. She took 2nd place in each of the categories for her age group. The title of her short story was "The Rainy Day" and the name of her poem was "The Little Deer." Here is a picture of her and us with her awards.

God has a plan for me! (and you!)

These words hit me the other night as I was up on a ladder painting in our bedroom. I am not sure why it was then, but I have had other words in odd situations (someday I’ll write about what I got while mowing one day). We hear that so often, that its significance is minimized. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR ME AND YOU! It is amazing to think that God cares enough for me (and you)that He has a plan for us. I am the first (Nomie will be the second) to tell you that I am impatient. I want to know now what it is. As we seek Him, pray and read His word, He will reveal what that plan is. Though I wish for the “scroll to be rolled down” or the “hand-writing on the wall” to show me exactly what to do, this isn’t the way it usually happens. We need to keep in mind that God's timing is perfect. As I encouraged our family that night, pray that God will reveal His plan for your life. Take time to listen to God. Good communication involves you being a good listener. Not just a talker.

Be encouraged! God has good things planned!

We took a ride to a Christmas Tree Farm in West Virginia to search for the perfect Christmas tree. After walking around for a while we finally spotted it and started to cut it down.

We purchased a fake Christmas tree (95 cents at Goodwill- price was right ;) ) to be able to put up in the kitchen/dining room area. Here are some pictures of the kids decorating the tree. It actually doesn't look that bad for a fake one. We did get a real tree as well that is in our living room. We had fun going to a Christmas tree farm in WV to find it and cut it down.

A few weeks ago we had about 3-4 inches of snow and the kids got the chance to go out and do some sledding and snowman building. This was the first year that Emma could enjoy herself. Even Maggie got into the fun.

New England Trip

We took a trip to Massachusetts for the wedding of Nomie's cousin Mike and decided to extend our stay in New England by visiting New Hampshire and Maine as well. Autumn and Grace are playing soccer this year and here are some pictures from their practices and games. They have both played 1 game so far. Autumn team (the Rhinos) tied 3-3. She had a shot on goal but it was wide right. Grace's team (the BlueJays) won 12-7. Grace is a "scoring machine". She had 6 or 7 goals. More to come!

Well, we have started to renovate the downstairs bathroom. I have ripped out pretty much everything and will be covering the tile with bead board. We have some up already and it looks good. I have had to replace rotted subfloor and floor boards but it is worth it. We will be installing a pedestal sink, new toilet and shower. It is starting to come together and I hope to have the toilet and sink in this weekend. Here are some picture from after the demolition.

After 2 weeks of getting up at 4 am to let the dogs out, accidents, nobody wanting to take the dogs out, mud in the house, and other numerous things we are taking the dogs back to the humane society. With Grant playing baseball and other things I think we just got in over our heads and don't have the time or desire to keep them and train them. So today Nomie will be taking them back. It is just too much for us. We would try to find someone to take them but we signed a contract with the humane society that if we ever did not want them we are to take them back to the humane society. At least now we know. Everyone seems to be okay with it. (for the most part). The kids like the idea of having a dog just not the taking care of it. We are going to try it with another pet some time. One that needs a little less attention and one that doesn't command so much of our time. Oh ,well. Live and Learn!

Just thought we would let everyone know that we have decided to adopt 2 twin boys. The process will be completed next week and they will be here.

Well, it was a rainy day here yesterday and I was looking for something to do inside so I decided to look behind the wood wall in the kitchen. We knew there was some sort of fireplace but not sure what it looked like. Here it is. Very farmhouse looking and we like it. It needs a little cleaning but we think it will look really nice after we get it cleaned up. We are also going to put some gas logs in it as well.

Lake Sherwood

We found out that there is a dirt road at the end of our road which will take you over into WV right to a state park called Lake Sherwood. It is part of the Mongahela State Park. It takes about 20-25 minutes to get there. We took a ride to see the park and it is actually very nice and has a swimming/camping and boating area. Here are some pictures from our trip today. The lake is still half frozen. I think this will be our new place to relax and for swimming.

Settlement is set

Well, after a long process and a lot of paperwork issues everything is set for settlement on the farmhouse. It is scheduled for Feb 15th at 11AM. We are so excited! Now the real work begins of getting everything in order for the move. Here are a few other pictures from inside the house.

Well, here are the pictures of the farmhouse. It is a 1900 Farmhouse with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. It is situated on 7.4 acres in Covington, VA. There is a barn plus 2 other out buildings and a detached 2 car garage.
